  • I received my initial training from the fantastic Writing Tutorial Services program at Indiana University. I underwent a semester of training and four semesters as a paid tutor working with undergraduate, graduate, and professional writers in all disciplines.

I was then trained in copy editing and project management for academic publishing at IU Press, and I began freelancing in 2010.

For several years I honed my technical skills and specialized in editing for ESL (English as a Second Language) scholars and in adapting dissertations into first publications. I worked primarily with writers from Business, Journalism, the Humanities, and Social Sciences.

This professional experience turned me into something of a “para-academic”. I became skilled at quickly discerning the written conventions that allow specialists to speak to each other, and the kinds of changes they need to make to speak to broader audiences.

I took a three-year hiatus from freelance work to manage a humanities research center, where I coordinated public talks and interdisciplinary seminars, and further developed skills at working with experts in a wide variety of subject matter areas. I ghost-wrote professional correspondence, proposals, reports, and marketing copy, and was invited to be a credited co-author on a paper published in the Journal of Business Law & Ethics.

Around 2016 I was invited to work on two freelance projects that led me to retool and relaunch my freelance business. One was a trade book that blended historical scholarship and personal memoir, and one was a book originally written for an academic audience that the publisher wanted to revise into a more accessible first-person narrative format. Both of these were exciting challenges that led me to focus on more developmental and substantive editing, helping authors in matters of structure, scope, voice, and genre. I also added book indexing to my services at this time.

In my early experience, I was meeting book manuscripts when they were close to the end. As my clients increasingly came to me at earlier and earlier stages of the writing process, I learned to help them with bigger-picture hurdles: organizing high volumes of information, structuring arguments and narratives, sifting through feedback, creating action plans, and identifying what type of editing is needed when.

Throughout the years I have also done occasional copy writing for social media, nonprofit, and commercial marketing contexts.

As a ghost writer and co-writer, I not only help authors to refine their existing writing, but also to develop compelling imagery, conceptual anchor points, narrative momentum, and a strong voice.

I have a BA in Religious Studies (anthropology and literature) and Classical Studies (Ancient Greek and Latin).

When I’m not reading, I’m usually watching Star Trek, doing art, enjoying nature, resisting fascism, and caring for my wonderful human and animal companions.
